Liberals oppose winding back CGT discount, but Greens on board

The federal opposition has signalled it would fight any move to pare back the capital gains tax discount for housing investors but, ultimately, any changes would most likely sail through the Senate with the support of the Greens.

As Treasurer Jim Chalmers and Finance Minister Katy Gallagher left the door wide open to scaling back the Howard-era tax break when they hand down what they say will be a reform budget in May, shadow treasurer Ted O’Brien said the Liberal Party would not support any change.
