Rates head up as politics heads downhill

Jim Chalmers says government spending has nothing to do with Australia’s inflation problem. Michele Bullock’s press conference offered him little political cover.

Michele Bullock’s press conference was hardly a media firing squad. But it was always going to be her toughest encounter yet as Reserve Bank governor as she answered a volley of questions about the bank reversing course to raise interest rates on Tuesday.

The pressure from Jim Chalmers might have sounded less overt, given he regularly stresses the importance of an independent Reserve Bank. That didn’t make his political messaging any less pointed.
