This beer has terroir – and costs $48 a bottle

A Barossa winemaker is testing if the “taste of place” concept also applies to grain and beer.

The new ales from Ben Radford’s Stonegarden label. 

Just before Christmas, winemaker Ben Radford harvested three hectares of barley grown at his home farm in the Eden Valley, South Australia. By the time you read this, that barley will have been malted, brewed and bottled, and ready for release as a small-batch, single-origin, vintage-dated ale under Radford’s Stonegarden label.

The beer will be sold at a fine-wine price – $48 for a 750ml champagne-cork-sealed bottle – alongside two other ales grown on different soils in farms in the neighbouring Barossa Valley.
